Richard Ormond -
the great-nephew of the artist, is one of the
world's leading authorities on the work of Singer Sargent. He has written many books, been Deputy Director of the National Portrait Gallery & Director of the national Maritime Museum.  He presented the most delightful images and drew attention to Sargent's style and technique and was warmly appreciated by our members. He is curating an Exhibition of Sargent's work in 2015 at the N.P.G and we will most certainly go and view it with fresh insight.

Peter Medhurst was greeted by a large enthusiastic audienc on his return to Westerham. This lecture was a most harmonious combination of music and painting - illustrated throughout and played on the piano /harpsichord and sung by Peter, with his fine baritone voice. A surprise and added bonus was the violinist Rob Norman, who came with Peter and played most brilliantly, culminating with a performance of "Autumn" from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi.  Not just a Lecture - more a Recital!

"The Impact of Glass"

Picture
Wednesday 6th February 2013.
Andy McConnell is one of Britain's leading authorities on glassware of all types: he is Glass Specialist on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow and has written many books.   A witty and spontaneous speaker he  examined the astonishing impact that  glass  has had on all of us and on  our ancestors. Glass is a magical substance,  whose role in transforming our lives is both unmeasurable and almost unrecognised. We all take glass for granted so this most stimulating lecture will encourage us all to view glass in a completely new light in the future.

Beautifully illustrated with both stills and videos of some of the wonderful productions that have been mounted at the Royal Opera House - a memorable evening.    We plan to invite him to return in 2015!
